October Unit: History & Geography Grapes of Wrath

Ken Burns' documentary on the Dust Bowl

This will be the school focus for the month of October. For homework, please click on the Ken Burn's documentary to get some background knowledge of the monthly novel, Grapes of Wrath. We will take the themes from the novel and incorporate ADL skills. For class tomorrow, I will expect a verbal reflection pretaining to the video.

See you tomorrow!

HANDWRITING: the FORGOTTEN A.D.L. skill & Additional Resources

Many of you have expressed an interest in improving your penmanship and getting help with your GED--regardless of your age. Many have received a copy of the books above, if you have not and would like a copy please ask me or any teacher at MSCD and we will take you to room 402. I have only a few copies left in my room (405) but please feel free to ask for additional work or help. You can email me at msyip751@gmail.com or talk to me when you arrive to school or class. My door is always open :-)

NEXT STEPS; NEXT MONTH

Dear Students,
During the first month of school, I have noticed some wonderful things happening such as:
  1. consistant attendance
  2. homeworks being returned
  3. discussions relevant to the development of productive citizens after completion of 751
  4. students editing their work by rewriting and proofreading their work
  5. classroom routines (timecards, picking up work folders, and revising work) are firmly in place.
With all this being said, today's vocabulary test reminds us that there is still work to be done. Please take on the leadership role and be the positive example to your peers. DO NOT let them distract or influence the path of your education.

I am proud of everyone's efforts but there are many challenges in front and ahead of us!
See you tomorrow!!

While I was gone...

I was at a workshop called Plant-Learn-Grow. It was extremely interesting and I think you guys will like it too. There is so much to do this year and I think we should add this to the list. Please view the TED video and the four websites below. We will briefly discuss Friday and possibly Monday after the vocabulary test.

Thursday's lesson and homework

Do you know what this means?
Let's DECODE!!

Students,
This is the next step in acquiring laundry skills...decoding the symbols you see on the tags of your coolest sweaters, tightest skinny jeans for the gals, or saggiest jeans for the guys. Now that you have paid $100--more or less--let's try to keep them they way you first bought them. WAVY!!!

For all incomplete work, please do so for homework. Students may work in small or large groups OR independently.

Laundry Trip/Homework

V81 students are sorting the clothes.

They are separating the darks from the whites.

One students is holding the laundry bag while another student places the dirty clothes we will use in ADL class.

A student from X01 is carefully watching the clothes get washed.

Two students are separating the nickels from the dimes to get more quarters.

Where does the detergent go? Where does the softener go? What is the difference between pre-wash and wash?

Getting ready to bring the clothes to the dryer!

Let's start folding!

Students from V81 are working together to get the job done.

Maria assists Oscar with folding an apron. Folding this apron was different from folding a hand towel.

More folding. I think they are getting the hang of it!

Yikes! All the apron strings are tangled! Thank you Ms. Vasques. I think we need to review the Laundry Essentials again.

One student from V81 had many great questions for the lady at the laundromat. He asked," how much each machine can wash?' What is the difference from the double loader and the largest loader?! The largest loader can wash 7lbs more. Who knew! Good questioning for clarification.

Time to pack up the folded laundry.

Today was a successful day at the laundromat. Heading back to MSCD!!!

For homework, please reflect back on the trip and write about the successes and challenges we had at the laundromat. Did we follow all the steps from Laundry Essentials? Did we have all the information to wash clothes independently?

Look forward to seeing and reading your responses! Tomorrow I will not be at school. See everyone Friday!

September Bulletin Board--Excellent Work Everyone!!

SEPTEMBER--Change and Continuity Unit
Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee by Dee Brown

The month of September is coming to a close, the bulletin board is a reflection of your hard work and participation at school--specifically, Activities of Daily Living. We learned basic laundry skills and how differently the Native Americans washed their clothes--not a washing machine but at the river. I look forward to next month's unit (History & Geography utilizing the novel, Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck).

Homework

Students,
Tomorrow will be our trip to the laundromat across the street. Please review all the necessary steps of basic laundry from previous handouts and postings. Also, I will not be in the school building on Thursday. I will post the work and homework that day. Remember to please treat the subsitute teacher just as you would any of the teachers at 751M.

See you tomorrow!!!

Homework

Please complete for homework. Use the keynote presentation and notes taken from Laundry Essential to answer the questions. If you do not have the either, please refer back to past postings.

Here is a preview of tomorrow's work. If you finished the homework, you can start this or at least get familiar with the work expected from you tomorrow.

What is Common Core Learning Standards? How does it impact you?

Good Morning Students,
During a morning discussion with V81, the demands of the city and state was brought up. The city and state standards are the same standards that all teacher are working towards especially at 751M. Our philosophy of rigor are the same for every student that attends 751M. Rigor=Input+1 which means we are constantly pushing each student one more level up. It maybe uncomfortable but it is intended to make you a better student, member of society, and member of your family.

Please click on the link below to get a better idea as to why teachers have been working and pushing you so hard.

2nd Week--NEXT STEP/Homework

Everyone has a yellow post-it note of the work they have not completed. As mentioned in previous posts, the completion of work is important to the success of your school year. Every lesson is connected to each other.

Also, for homework, please bring back your permission slips for the trip on Wednesday, we will gain hands-on experience on doing laundry.

I know you all may think that you know how to do laundry but as I demonstrated today with my black skirt that I messed up while doing my own laundry...everyone needs practice.

Have a great weekend! See you all on Monday!

Note-Taking X01

Jeremy and Daquan are working in a heterogeneous group to simplify the text required in ADL class regarding basic laundry skills. A keynote presentation printout is provided to help them along with this new skill. Similar to the bilingual class, they are also using color coded sentence strips.

Note-Taking V81

The Bilingual students are learning how to take notes of a long text. Note taking will help them organize their thoughts and related to the text easily. They are using their native language to support to support their English.
Students are using cognates (words that spelled almost the same in English and Spanish) to help them understand the text. Color coded sentence strips are also used to help them identify academic vocabulary (in orange) and their definition (in yellow).

Building Laundry Skills

Hello students!! Here is a preview of the next lesson we will be discussing. This is based on the ADL checklist, we will start a unit on laundry. Please feel free to become familiar with the worksheets we will be using in class.

I know many students believe they have mastered this skill. As I was researching, I was surprised to discover how little I know about doing laundry properly! Yikes! I guess I still have a lot to learn too!
